Well the holidays have come and gone and here we are in a new year with aspirations for health, happiness and prosperity (a return to normalcy doesn’t sound that bad either).
As I was preparing for my first workday of 2010, I couldn’t help but notice the tightness of my slacks and the snugness of my shirt, but after thousands of decadent calories of scrumptious delectables, I was hardly surprised. In an odd way, I anticipated the ” firm embrace” of my waistband with a sense of déjà vu.
I’ve been down this road many times before having gained and lost scores of pounds over the years and while as a health professional I don’t advocate the weight yo-yo, I’ve come to accept my pattern. (Thankfully at 6’4’’, I hide it well.)
I began to think about one of my long-time dental patients, Eugene Gross, a Renaissance man who over the course of his lifetime had several successful careers. He once told me that he was never in a rush to transition from one job to the next. He took his time and “spent his money to make room for new money.”
In the spirit of Mr. Gross, I will endeavor to lose weight in order to make room for new weight.
